DARO: The Muara Lassa Bridge is one of three bridge projects constructed by the Sarawak state government in coastal areas, alongside Batang Paloh and Batang Igan.
Spanning 2.43 kilometres, it stands as the second longest bridge in Sarawak, with a construction cost of RM597.58 million.
This development has sparked joy among residents, particularly those in Daro and Pulau Bruit.
HADERI TRAS, 69, Village head of Kampung Penipah
“I am very happy with the new bridge as it shortens the distance from Pulau Bruit to Daro. This makes it easier for us to carry out official business since government offices are only located in Daro. It will also ease our other errands, such as shopping for essentials. Not only that, but it will make it easier for us to go to the hospital; getting treatment was challenging when we relied on the ferry. Economically, I am confident it will improve the standard of living for people in both areas, as we can now market our agricultural and marine produce further afield.”
JINGGA IGON, 58, Head of Sungai Klai Longhouse
“In the past, we would wake up at 5 am to get to Daro. After the bridge is completed, we can leave at around 7 am for official matters without waiting for the ferry. This bridge has been long awaited, especially by small-scale farmers, as it will ease the sale of agricultural products and indirectly raise their income and standard of living.”
HASLIMI HASSAN, 48, Village head of Kampung Badong
“As a village leader, I feel deeply moved and happy that this bridge is almost completed and will soon be used by the public. Despite various constraints and challenges, Alhamdulillah, with everyone’s sacrifices, it is set to open next year. This bridge will also boost the economy of residents in the area. As a resident here, I am grateful to the Sarawak government for approving the Muara Lassa Bridge project.”
ROSITA JAHRI, 47, Councillor of Kampung Semop
“I feel incredibly lucky and proud; it’s hard to put into words. Until now, we had to use the ferry to conduct any business in Daro. Moving forward, it will be much easier and will undoubtedly enhance the socio-economic situation of the residents. If an issue arises at night, we can go straight to Daro without the ferry, shortening the journey. This bridge will also strengthen the ties between residents of Pulau Bruit and Daro.”
BUJANG RAZELI, 72, Pemanca of Daro District
“With this bridge, the socio-economic status of residents in this area, especially on Pulau Bruit, will be elevated, allowing them to bring their products to market at higher prices. I hope that the residents here will fully utilise this infrastructure provided by the government.”
