KUCHING: Illegal structures and extensions in commercial shop lots under the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) jurisdiction will have to go.

“We don’t condone any form of illegal structures within the council’s jurisdiction,” MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said.

Lo said MPP has identified more than 100 unauthorised structures and extensions on commercial and residential properties within its areas.

He said warning notices had been issued to the owners, ordering them to demolish these extensions from their properties, but ‘apparently, the warnings fell on deaf ears’.

“The council has already issued a number of notices to people who construct illegal structures beyond the limit of their shop houses and encroaching into carparks.

“MPP has already issued notices and will take legal actions against those who refuse to adhere to the directive.”

Lo went on to advise those contemplating putting up illegal structures or extensions not to do so.

Under the Local Authorities Ordinance (Cleanliness) By-Laws, 1999 Part IV the penalty is a minimum fine of RM100 or not more than RM2,000, or six months’ imprisonment, or both.
