MIRI: With Christmas just around the corner, the Women Entrepreneurs and Professionals Association Sarawak (WEPS) – a forerunner of developing entrepreneurial skills among women – has not forgotten the less fortunate and the elderly.

Last Monday, 12 members of the association visited the Shangrila Service Centre here – a privately operated centre which provides proper care for elderly folk in a safe, pleasant and homely environment.

WEPS vice president Lili Puk led the members who also included Datin Judy Wan Morshidi, Florence Enau, and Dr Loh Yunn Hua, former WEPS president and manager of Shangrila Service Centre.

At the centre, they held carolling to cheer up the 18 residents, besides distributing Christmas gifts and having refreshment with staff and residents who are not bedridden.

The goodies brought joy and smiles to all the residents, while the warmth and care shown brought some of them to tears.

Some bedridden residents were seen happily singing Christmas songs, while others like Yap Poh Choo, 91, joyfully shared her life story, including her love of singing different songs and the National Anthem, NegaraKu

Dr Loh thanked WEPS members for demonstrating their spirit of giving and respecting the elderly living away from their families, and was also very happy that the people were still very caring to the elderly.

Meanwhile WEPS, set up in 1996, promotes women’s entrepreneurial development through networking, education and training, as well as improving their social and psychological well-being.

Its membership is open to Malaysian women entrepreneurs and professionals (holding diplomas or degrees), aged 18 and above, and residing in Sarawak.

The fees for annual registration, annual membership, and life membership are RM30, RM60 and RM1,000 respectively.

Further details about WEPS are obtainable from Serawa Budul at 019-8845808, secretary-general Wendy Tiong (019-8846257), or assistant secretary-general Lorna Morrison (012-6467271).
