KUCHING: Bryan Junency Gustin clinched two gold medals for the Sarawak para contingent team in the Para weightlifting event (88 kilograms category) at the 21st Para Malaysian Games (PARA SUKMA XXI) 2024.
He secured the gold medals for the best lift and the total lift, setting a new tournament and national record with a third lift of 191 kg.
However, Bryan’s hopes of breaking his newly set record were dashed when his 201 kg lift in the ‘power lift’ round was disqualified due to an unsteady attempt.
“I accidentally touched the rack of the barbell, which prevented me from breaking the record,” he explained when asked about the failed attempt.
“I was initially nervous but managed to lift all the weights with confidence. Unfortunately, luck wasn’t on my side for another record,” he added.
Speaking to reporters at the Multipurpose Hall of the Youth and Sports Department today (Sept 24), Bryan expressed his desire to continue participating in the sport and aiming for the upcoming SEA Games 2027.
“I have previously competed in the SEA Games 2023 in Cambodia, and I hope to continue working hard and giving my best,” he said.
He also expressed his pride and happiness for his brother, Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, who recently won a gold medal at the Paris Paralympic 2024 Games.
“I am incredibly proud of his achievement and hope to follow in his footsteps,” he added.
