TAMIN assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang believes Sarawak’s increasing revenue is going to benefit the state and its people in a bigger way.
Last week, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg unveiled a RM15.8 billion State Budget ’25.
In tabling the people-centric budget, aiming at creating job opportunities and increasing household incomes, the Premier proposed several initiatives to help improve disposable income in Sarawak.
Christopher shared his thoughts on the Sarawak government initiatives with Sarawak Tribune.
SARAWAK TRIBUNE: What do you think about the Premier’s notion to increase government’s spending to stimulate economic growth?
CHRISTOPHER: This budget aims to be inclusive of every sector and community where it provides opportunities to participate in business, develop new skills and techniques and others. This would stimulate economic activity in the state and nation.
TRIBUNE: In your opinion, why is it important to spend more to have more?
CHRISTOPHER: This is not just about spending more. Government spending here is to create opportunities in business and employment. It is like teaching someone how to fish so they will be able to catch fish on their own in the future.
TRIBUNE: As a person involved within the community, can you describe the difficulties faced by the people struggling to make ends meet?
CHRISTOPHER: I would say lack of resources and means to ger started. For example in my kawasan, people have land and if they want to plant sawit, rubber, and others, they lack the money to start. It’s very expensive to clear the land, pay salary to workers and even to buy palm trees or rubber sapling.
TRIBUNE: Looking at the budget’s initiative, how can it close the gap on poverty?
CHRISTOPHER: I believe this is a start for people as it shows them where they can go for assistance and support and guidance. These include the education sector, agricultural, modern industries, and others.
TRIBUNE: How can the government ensure that the allocated funds for these initiatives are used effectively and reach the intended beneficiaries?
CHRISTOPHER: This should be a KPI for the respective agencies. They must have SOPs, methodologies laid out, to ensure its success.
