BINTULU: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is pleased with Budget 2024’s allocation for Sarawak.

While Sarawak had hoped for a larger sum, he acknowledged the budget’s constraints.

“To me, the allocation for Sarawak is acceptable. What’s crucial is that Sarawak has a representative in the Inland Revenue Board (IRB). This is mandatory.

“From there, perhaps we can address the issue of Article 112D (concerning the annual special grant given to the state under Article 112D of the Federal Constitution),” he said this during a press conference after officiating at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) 2023 Northern Zone Special Convention at Bintulu Civic Centre here today.

Abang Johari, who is also the PBB president, expressed his gratitude to the Unity government for granting such a substantial allocation to Sarawak.

“It’s not limited to the allocation of RM5.8 billion. Other ministries also have their budget allocations for Sarawak. Thus, the total might exceed RM5.8 billion. The funds also cover infrastructure projects like the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) and educational initiatives which I believe will aid our planning,” he explained.

Furthermore, he thanked the federal government for supporting the proposed Sarawak Cancer Centre in the Budget 2024.

“The Sarawak Cancer Centre initiative is unique because it represents collaboration between the Sarawak government and the Unity government. The Ministry of Health will oversee the cancer centre’s operations. It’s our understanding that Sarawak will also contribute to the construction and provision of necessary infrastructure for the centre,” he said.
