SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has been urged to build more facilities for people with disabilities (OKU).

This was said by Sibu Chinese community leader Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau Lee Ming at the Sarawak Society for the Blind Sibu Chapter’s appreciation dinner on Sunday.

Also present at the dinner, which was held in conjunction with society’s 43rd annual open house, were SMC chairman Clarence Ting organising chairperson Datin Judy Lau Kung Ee.

“In Malaysia as a whole, we are still lacking in facilities for people with disabilities as in some government or private buildings there are no OKU-friendly facilities.

“Therefore, I hope he (Ting) will look into the matter,” he said.

On a related note, Lau also hoped professionals or skilled personnel can be recruited to either teach or help those with vision impairments.

“They know and understand better on how to manage people with visual impairments and I feel that the chapter should consider this,” he added.
