KAPIT: The Sarawak government will build an airport in Bukit Mabong District near here starting at the end of this year.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed the project would cost more than RM100 million.
“With the development, Kapit will no longer be known as a remote area,” he said in a press conference after attending a Sarawak development coordination committee meeting yesterday.
He was confident that the airport would open up Kapit area and would have a big impact not only on agriculture but also tourism.
“Our main objective now is ensuring all the areas under the Upper Rajang Development Authority (Urda) are equipped with basic infrastructure such as roads, and supplies of water and electricity.
“In ten years’ time, Kapit will be connected to Sibu, Baleh, Belaga and Bintulu with Kapit itself as the hub or centre point,” he said.
He believes that when all the development projects are in place, they will improve the living standard of the people.
Also present at the meeting were Abang Johari’s deputies, Tan Sri James Jemut Masing and Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
