BUKIT Assek must be redeveloped if Sibu is to be transformed into a modern city.
In pointing this out, Chieng Jin Ek (GPS-Bukit Assek) said the plan was huge and complicated but with strong political will, he believed that the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan could be done.
“Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has instructed the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) to spearhead the task to revamp the 497-acre low-lying, water-logged part of Sibu to a modern cityscape.
“The Sarawak government announced the initial funding of RM1bil signifying its commitment to the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan.”
He said this in his debate speech on the Supply Bill (2023) 2022 during the fourth day of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Thursday (Nov 24).
Chieng also pointed out the Sarawak government, who made study visits to Australia and Singapore, also engaged an international consultant who would work together with the local consultant to best tailor the masterplan of the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan.
On poor cellular and internet coverage, he said network connectivity was the most concern to get ready Sarawak for digital economy.
The Sarawak Budget 2023 concerning enhancement of digital connectivity to widen the internet coverage and connectivity, he said, was the essential for this purpose.
“In my constituency, the poor cellular and internet coverage areas such as Bukit Penyau, Nanga Salim, Pulau Keladi, and some areas along Jalan Dr Wong Soon Kai need immediate attention from the relevant agencies and ministries.”
