SIBU: The Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan will commence in 2026, transforming Sibu’s urban landscape over 15 years.

In announcing this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed that the project, spanning four phases, will reshape Sibu akin to Singapore, connecting the town with new infrastructure.

“This project is estimated to be carried out in four phases, and estimated to be completed in 15 years until 2040,” he said.

He said this in his speech at Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri Bahagian Sibu which was attended by Head of State (TYT) Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi at Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor’s Hall, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) here last night (Apr 13).

“We will not only have a new Kampung Datu with its waterfront, but a small river connected to Bukit Assek that will change the face of Sibu. The whole of Sibu will transform.

“With the development of infrastructure, and this urban renewal project, the economy of Sibu will thrive, especially the construction sector, it will thrive for the coming years. And this is already a boost to the economy of Sibu,” he added.

Abang Johari said the development will also allow Sibu to be connected to neighbouring towns including Kapit.

“This will make Sibu continuously connected, apart from Sarikei, Belawai, Kuala Rajang, when the coastal road is completed, it will bring mobility closer including Daro, Serdeng, Batang Igan, all will be connected by bridges that will be completed by 2030,” he stressed.

He also pointed out that all infrastructure expenditures are borne by the Sarawak Government itself.

With the rapid access to transportation networks alongside the Bukit Assek redevelopment project, Abang Johari said Sibu’s economic activities will certainly thrive.

Also present were Abang Johari’s wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and his wife, Datin Seri Zuraini Abdul Jabbar, Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, Chief Political Secretary to the Premier Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman and others.
