KUCHING: Lack of cash flow is among the main obstacles faced by Bumiputera contractors in completing big projects awarded to them.
This was told by Works Ministry corporate planning division secretary Zureen Zubir.
Zureen said for Bumiputera contractors to be effective in their project delivery, they must have sufficient amount of capital, enough manpower, available supply of materials and the necessary machineries to implement these projects.
He said this when officiating at Bumiputera Contractor Association Sarawak’s first meeting at a hotel here yesterday.
He pointed out that there are only a few numbers of Bumiputera companies who are involved in the supply of building materials.
According to Zureen, it was the policy of the government to award at least 30 percent of project works to Bumiputera contractors, adding that so far this year the government has awarded 45 percent of the works to Bumiputera contractors.
He also said that more than 30 percent of the Pan Borneo Highway project was awarded to Bumiputera contractors.
On sick projects, Zureen said there are 56 projects worth RM32 billion throughout the country, adding that they will be tendered in October this year.
Zureen further advised Bumiputera contractors not to depend too much on government jobs, saying there are also private projects that they should grab.
Also present at the function were honorary chairman of Malaysian Bumiputera Contractors Association (PKBM) Datuk Mokhtar Samad, PKBM president Datuk Azman Yusoff, PKBM secretary-general Ahmad Zaharani Yusof Omar and PKBM Sarawak chairman Datuk Seri Abang Aditajaya Abang Alwi.
