BINTULU: Bunkering services will be established in the region with four strategic industries emerging in the waters of Sarawak.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg pointed to Sarawak’s location advantage, resource availability, and trained workforce to support these new industries.

He said Bintulu is a strategic location equipped with the necessary materials for related industries, further supported by the Borneo Oil and Gas (BOG) Supply Base.

The Premier highlighted ongoing projects, including a methanol plant and an upcoming ammonia facility, which will also involve the production of fertilisers through ammonia cracking.

These initiatives represent significant downstream activities planned for Bintulu.

“We are also seeing significant investments from Japan and South Korea focused on hydrogen production, which underscores the urgent need for infrastructure to support this emerging sector. This will be the only green energy produced in the region.

“Additionally, we are implementing Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) offshore Sarawak, which will enhance our capacity for carbon storage. This necessitates a supportive base.

“The shipping industry is also transforming, shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources like ammonia and methanol. We aim to provide services to shipping industries operating between Europe and the Far East.

“Given the international shipping routes, Bintulu is an ideal location for these shipping-related industries,” he said.

The Premier told the media this after officiating at the launch of the Borneo Oil and Gas Supply Base at the Transit Shed, Multipurpose Terminal, Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd, in Monday (Sept 23).

Abang Johari, who serves as the Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, emphasised the need to reassess the state’s development, particularly in relation to port development.

He shared that Surbana Jurong, a firm with extensive experience in creating major ports in Singapore, will assist the state government in planning the second phase of the Bintulu and Samalaju Ports under Bintulu Port Holdings.

“This will have a profound and positive impact on the local community. We have new approaches that will significantly enhance the lives of the people here,” he assured.
