KUCHING: Businessmen on Monday said the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Fund is in great hands following the appointments of distinguished individuals of strong credentials to the board recently.
Association of Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak (ACCCIS) secretary-general Datuk Jonathan Chai said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has laid a truly solid foundation for the fund.
“The diverse and extensive experience of those members will definitely help the fund to achieve its objectives and eventually benefit every Sarawakian,” he said.
Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations (SFCA) president Datuk Richard Wee added that members of the Board of Guardians are distinguished and respectable personalities in their own respective fields.
“I am confident that their appointment will augur well and instil confidence in the industry for the launching of our Sarawak Sovereign Future Fund,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.
On the appointment of former Federal Court judge Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie as the chairman, both of them agreed with it, with Chai stating that his legal knowledge will be invaluable to the setting up of the Fund.
“It will have to deal with a lot of legal issues as well as compliance under the prevailing laws,” he said.
Wee added that not only is he a well respected legal mind with extensive experience in government agencies, his vast experience and network along with his wide exposure will be an asset to the Board.
“Excellent choice,” he said.
Earlier, it was stated that Sarawak has appointed nine distinguished professionals to the Board of Guardians for the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Future Fund with Sulong Matjeraie as the chairman.
Abang Johari said the state fund will be managed in a professional and transparent manner by experts and professionals in the fields of finance, investment, legal and governance.
