Businessman fined RM2k for having imitation guns

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court today sentenced a businessman to RM2,000 fine or two months’ jail in default for illegally having eight barrels of imitation guns at a shopping mall last June.

Mathiew, 38, of Kampung Tabuan Dayak, pleaded guilty to a charge read in front of Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

According to the charge document, he was suspected of illegally keeping eight barrels of imitation guns in a shop in Jalan Song around 4.20pm on June 24.

As a result, the accused was charged under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, which carries a maximum one-year jail sentence, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both if convicted.

Based on the facts of the case, a police team from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Kuching IPD Weapons Branch conducted an inspection at a shop in the shopping centre at around 4.20pm, on June 24.

The inspection found that the booty included a Russian Groza-style imitation weapon with attachments, two S686 imitation weapon barrels, and an M3 stickered imitation weapon with attachments.

In addition, also found were fake weapons with ‘M3-1’ stickers, fake M24 gel blaster sniper weapons priced at RM250, fake weapons in the shape of Revolver (pistol) Smith & Wesson Model Zp-5, fake weapons resembling shotguns, 54 packs of fake ammunition in the shape of white gel and 23 packs of imitation ammunition in the form of shotgun shells.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
