SUNGAI PETANI: It all started when preparing burger hankered by her eldest son gave an idea to trader Yusmalina Mohd Nawi, 37, from Bedong, near here, to sell no frills budget burgers or ‘burger pekak’ (deaf burger).
Yusmalina, who has a computer engineering diploma, sold a chicken burger and a ‘banjo’ for as low as RM1.50 each and RM1.80 for a beef burger using the ‘Ramly’ brand patties at her house in Taman Sungai Lalang, assisted by her husband, Hamzah Saidin, 43.
When met by Bernama at her house recently, Yusmalina, who had three children from three to nine years old, said the budget burgers sold at her house, which was dubbed ‘Cafe D’Rumah’, received very encouraging response since the end of February.
“My husband and I named our burgers ‘burger pekak’ because ours are budget burgers. It is akin to making the burgers for our own consumption using only whatever materials that are available in the house. It is similar to the ‘kopi pekak’ and ‘maggi pekak’ as normally described by the people of Kedah. A burger with an additional egg, like the Special Burger, is only sold for RM2.
“Our budget burgers are the same sizes as those others sold, still tasty because I grill the bread using margarine, it is best that Ramly brand patties are used, other than cucumber and hot sweet sauce, with ketchup to add to the taste, but no mayonnaise and vegetable as sold in the shops,’’ she said.
Yusmalina said, despite operating at home, some of her customers were those from outside the housing estate where she stayed, and she could sell from 40 to 60 burgers a day.
‘’We also accept bookings from clients who want to hold a feast. The most booking we received was for 140 budget burgers,’’ said Yusmalina, who also revealed that she developed an interest for business since she was 11-year-old when she sold her mother’s curry puffs at school. – Bernama
