KUCHING: As Hari Raya Aidilfitri draws near, families are busy preparing new clothes and delicious food for the upcoming festive season.

However, the increase in prices of goods has forced many low-income earners to cut down on unnecessary expenses and purchases, with some unable to afford new clothes.

Realising this, Noor Asmah Mohamed Moktar has decided to give away pre-loved or second-hand clothes, all of which are in good condition. She has set up a display of these items in front of her shop – Chelum Chocolate Café at Kubah Ria Commercial Complex – with a simple message on a paper sign that reads ‘PAKAIAN PERCUMA’.

According to her, there are approximately 40 to 50 items available for giveaway, including items such as ‘baju kurung’, ‘baju melayu’, and long pants, among others.

“Most of the clothes are second-hand items from my own family, and I’ve personally washed them to ensure they’re clean and ready for use. So, there’s no need to worry,” assured the café owner.

“I’m not asking for much in return, and there’s no need to take any pictures or seek my permission. Those interested in the clothes are free to take them as they need, no questions asked,” added the cafe owner.

During an interview with New Sarawak Tribune, Asmah, who is affectionately known as Kak Semah, expressed her awareness of the struggles faced by many families who are trying to make ends meet. She noted that social media was filled with posts about the rising cost of goods, indicating the dire economic situation faced by many.

She said she saw a lot of postings in recent days where some complained that food items are getting more expensive while others could not afford to buy new clothes for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, due to slowing economic.

“I hope by doing this (giving away pre-loved clothes) will ease the burden of some families and put a smile on some faces this festive season.

“It is always important to be grateful that we have, and one way to show our gratitude is by giving back to society. Some choose to donate money while I decided to give away clothes,” she added.

In the meantime, her café is running a promotion where customers can purchase five units of Chelum Sarawak Chocolate for only RM30 or three boxes of BeHis Praline Chocolate for RM100. Those who are interested can either visit the café or follow their Facebook page CHELUM Sarawak Chocolate or Instagram account @my.chelum.
