The Federal government has been urged to set up a Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex in Serikin to enhance security between the Sarawak and Kalimantan border.
Datuk Henry Harry Jinep (GPS-Tasik Biru) said this was due to low security control at the border, where Indonesian traders move freely to trade and sell their goods inside the Malaysian territory.
“There may be criminal elements moving and intermingling among the traders that could pose security threats.
“We should not be complacent, and we should learn from the arrest of foreign terror suspects in Serian in March this year, and should be more vigilant,” he said.
Jinep said this when debating the motion of thanks to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri’s opening remarks.
He commended the security personnel, army and police for making Serikin safe.
“Previously, the authorities had successfully thwarted smuggling and thefts of controlled items and vehicles from Sarawak into Kalimantan,” he added.
