KUCHING: Today’s youth would generally want a government that is smart and effective in implementing policies that benefit the people and nation especially issues affecting them.
Political observer Datuk Peter Minos said most young people he met with had expressed their desire for the government to create more jobs because they need better incomes.
“They would be very unhappy and frustrated if after secondary school or college or later after completing their tertiary studies, there are no jobs for them,” he said.
He added that young voters did not like to hear the word ‘corruption’ in the government because they are aware that this has been a terrible disease in the nation.
“Corruption has brought shame to Malaysia. The world looked down on the country because of corruption.
“Also, they said corruption would kill the country, and I cannot disagree with their opinion on that.
“Hence, the younger voters prefer young elected representatives and not the same old faces. They also want their YBs (elected representatives) who are friendly and not “sombong” (arrogant). Fair expectations from them,” Minos said.
He noted that youth have often expressed unhappiness over the glaring inequality in many sectors between Malaya and Sarawak and Sabah.
“We must not think our young voters do not know anything. They do. Just talk to them because they have ideas to share, some of which are valid.
“The future, after all, is theirs. So my advice is that every political parties and politicians must be aware of this,” he said.
