BETONG: Rural folk expect Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also Finance Minister, to prioritise measures to reduce the cost of living when Budget 2023 is presented on Feb 24.

They also want larger allocations to be given to Sarawak for smooth and consistent development.

One thing that needs to be given attention is the allocation to reduce the cost of living. Now is a difficult period after the Covid-19 pandemic. I also hope for a larger allocation to sustain development.

The increase in the cost of living due to the increase in the prices of goods is burdening, especially for those of us who work regularly. Selling farm produce is also difficult. I hope there is an inclusive effort to deal with this situation.

I am actually excited about the Unity Government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. How he organises the people’s socioeconomic wellbeing is eagerly awaited, especially through Budget 2023. Apart from the cost of living issue, I expect Sarawak to get a better distribution this time around.

Sarawak is admittedly still behind in terms of infrastructure. So, the Budget is widely anticipated. If possible, attention should be given at all levels so that no layer of society is left behind. I also expect rural infrastructure to continue to be improved under the new federal government.
