KUCHING: There is a need for Malaysia to reevaluate the People with Disabilities Act of 2008 in order to be globally aligned with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Person with Disabilities (CRPD), said Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor added that according to the Department of Social Welfare (JKM), as of May 31 in 2021, there are a total of 579,150 persons with disabilities (PwDs) in Malaysia, accounting to about 1.8 per cent of the Malaysian population.

Wee said this during his speech at the Neurodivergent Mural Art and Bazaar opening ceremony yesterday at Telang Usan Hotel.

“These people are also effective members of our communities, and as such, deserve more awareness, support and recognition.

“I truly believe that the Neurodivergent Mural Art Bazaar is an important step to create and raise awareness about neurodiversity and empower neurodivergent individuals.

“This project and cause also beautifully aligns with MBKS’s vision of enhancing the quality of life of the people of Kuching South,” he explained.

He went on to say that the mural was completed with the help of 19 neurodivergent artists from multiple organisations such as Autsome Kuching, Heart Treasures, Persatuan Bagi Kebajikan Kanak-kanak Terencat Akal Sarawak (PERKATA) School, and Kuching Autistic Association.

The initiative exemplifies the true meaning of the spectrum, with everyone working together to create a mural that will serve as a symbol of acceptance, understanding, and empowerment.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of Telang Usan Hotel said that the neurodivergent mural art project is not only an opportunity to showcase the talents of neurodivergent artists but also an opportunity to raise awareness and support for the neurodivergent community.

“The cause is close to us, as some of our family members are on the autism spectrum, and we understand the importance of inclusivity and acceptance.

“Today, we are excited to unveil the mural art on our wall, created by hardworking and talented neurodivergent artists. We hope that it will inspire and empower others, and we look forward to continuing our support for the neurodivergent community,” she said.
