KUCHING: Independent politician cum book author, Lina Soo urged Sarawak lawmakers to take a progressive step in financial reform by passing legislation that would recognise gold as legal tender in the state.

She said this during a press conference for her new book launching entitled ‘Gold Is Not Sexy’ held at Grand Continental Hotel here today (Sep 24).

“I call upon our Sarawak lawmakers to pass a law in DUN for gold to be accepted as legal tender, instead of waiting for the day when we can have our Sarawak currency, we can legitimise gold now as legal tender through a Sarawak Gold Bullion or Special Legal Tender Act,” she said.

She elaborated that recognising gold as a legitimate form of currency would provide a robust financial platform that operates within regulatory compliance while maintaining independence from traditional financial systems.

Soo added that gold would offer stability, safeguarding Sarawakians from the effects of inflation while reinforcing financial autonomy and economic justice.

“With Sarawak’s legal recognition of gold as a legitimate form of currency, this law will reinforce the principles of financial autonomy, security, and economic justice,” she said.

The proposed law, if passed, would revolutionise Sarawak’s economic framework by providing a stable and reliable form of currency, ensuring long-term financial independence for the state.

“This offers our government and Sarawakians a stable and reliable form of currency that safeguards against inflation and underscores the practicality and potential to revolutionise how we think about the alternative use of money,” she stated.
