When your tent has cosy beds, sockets for your phone and a view of the Manhattan skyline, you’re not camping. You’re glamping. New York’s most glamorous camping hotspot is a small island a few minutes from the city by ferry.

Gather around the campfire for a peaceful evening on an island with no cars, no inhabitants and a fantastic view of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline.

New York’s historic Governors Island now offers overnight camping – or rather, glamping – in roomy tents complete with real beds, bedside tables, lamps, carpets and even sockets to charge your phone.

In the daytime, visitors can walk or bike around the island, which was once a military post and is now open seasonally as a public park, and is just a few minutes’ ferry ride away from Manhattan and Brooklyn.

In the evening, guests can head the island’s restaurant and bar before toasting some marshmallows on the camp fire. The camping accommodation was launched this year and is open until the end of October, with plans to reopen next summer.

With prices starting at around US$150 per night, it’s not exactly a cheap option, and campers will have to contend with noise from passing flight and boat traffic – but the view across the water goes a long way to compensate for that. – dpa
