KUCHING: An Electrical and Electronic Waste Collection Campaign has been launched in the continuing effort to address the unplanned disposal of e-waste.
The campaign which has intensified since 2020, has already seen more than 338.2 metric tonnes of e-waste being collected across the state this month.
It is being next held at the car park of the Simunjan Community Hall this weekend from 8.30am to 4.30 pm.
Relevant government agencies, along with registered contractors, are coming together to collect e-waste and dispose or recycle them.
E-waste includes electrical and electronic equipment such as laptops, desktops, printers, mobile phones, washing machines, air conditioners, refrigerators, and other appliances that are damaged, obsolete, and no longer usable, thus posing significant hazards to the environment.
The objective of the campaign is to raise awareness of the dangers of e-waste and promote safe and eco-friendly handling and disposal methods to the local community.
Improper disposal of electrical and electronic waste can have negative impacts on humans, animals, aquatic life and marine ecosystems.
The presence of heavy metals such as nickel and mercury in some components of electrical and electronic waste can cause water, groundwater, and soil pollution if not adequately and correctly managed.
