KUCHING: Those planning to attempt inter-district travel to go back to their village during this Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive celebration should cancel their intentions to do so.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail said police would not just arrest those who tried but those caught doing so would be issued compound notices.
“I would like to advise those who are planning to move across districts to go back to their villages to cancel their plans,” he advised.
On inter-district travel applications, Aidi said all types of applications would not be approved except for emergency purposes.
“This is to prevent people from lining up at police stations. Let us together hold the responsibility to prevent the Covid-19 virus from spreading to the villages,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Aidi said as of Friday (May 22), 54,577 vehicles had been inspected at 51 roadblocks placed at the district borders throughout Sarawak.
He added that only two compound noticess were issued on Friday to vehicles attempting to cross districts.
“However, today (May 23), it is estimated that more will be detained and compounded,” he said.
On May 21, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that inter-district travel would not be allowed during the conditional movement control order (CMCO) period.
Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas on the same day, said they would announce Sarawak’s stance on inter-district travel once official notice from the federal government was received.
