KUCHING: The state Barisan Nasional (BN) is in a good momentum for the coming 14th General Election (GE14).
According to Chief Minister who is also the state BN Chairman, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg, they are on the final stage of finalising the candidate list for the election.
“We will hand over the candidate list to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to be finalised,” said Johari at the Sehati Research Institute (SRI) inaugural seminar on ‘One Belt One Road (OBOR) Initiative – Sarawak Challenges and Opportunities’, at Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Sa’ati Hall here yesterday.
However, Johari refused to reveal the candidate names from the state’s component party (PBB, SUPP, PRS and PDP) when asked by reporters.
“We shall wait and see who is going to be named as the candidates,” he pointed out.
Earlier in his keynote address, the Chief Minister urged the Chinese community here to support the BN candidate for the Kuching parliamentary seat.
“Give your full support to our BN candidate so that we could plan a bigger development for the Chinese community,” he said.
Meanwhile, SUPP President, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian did not deny or admit that he would be contesting in the coming GE14th.
“I am not saying anything, and I am already in the Parliament as a senator,” said Sim.
He also noted that candidate must be from SUPP if they want to contest under SUPP flag for the seven allocated seats.
On the other hand, SRI, a non-profit organisation (NGO) of SUPP would examine the global or international agenda that would affect Sarawak.
According to Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Lee Kim Shin, with its establishment in 1994 by the late Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Wong Soon Kai, the organisation has been patronised by researchers, university students and lecturers, public officials and many others for information.
He added the institute which is still on its early stage of establishment is headed by Dr Voon Jan Cham as the Research Director.
