MIRI: Members of the public here found the carcass of a finless porpoise at Tanjong Lobang Beach here on Sunday afternoon.
The 100-cm long tailless carcass was found by beach visitors at about 5.30pm. Pictures of it went viral on Facebook after that.
Concerned, Miri Branch Malaysian Nature Society chairman, Iqbal Abdollah rushed to the beach to check the carcass of the mammal.
According to Iqbal, the mammal was believed to have died after being stuck in a fishing net.
“Based on my observation, the tail was cut off before the mammal was thrown into the sea,” he said.
Iqbal said the female mammal was estimated to weigh about 30 kilogrammes.
The finless porpoise or Indon-Pacific finless porpoise is one of the seven porpoise species in the world. It is protected under the Fisheries Act 1985.
