CARRO Golf Polos, Malaysia’s first designer golf polo brand, made its debut in Kuching in December 2023. Co-founded by Swedish-born designer Caroline Wass, the Kuala Lumpur-based brand is currently quite popular among golf players and enthusiasts in the country.

Representing the CARRO Team in the Kuching fashion show segment of MKA 2023 was co-founder Mark Westwood, a Malaysian Eurasian based in Kuala Lumpur.

On the first day of his December visit, this fitness enthusiast took an extensive walk from his hotel in Padungan to the Kuching Waterfront, around the city’s Chinatown, and beyond.

When we ran into him at Kuching Waterfront, where we had accompanied the kids in the MKA 2023 pageant on a river cruise, we wanted to give him a ride in our car.

Westwood politely excused himself to further explore our city on foot.

On the day of the show, he arrived promptly backstage, had a briefing session with the 10 local models chosen for the CARRO fashion show and watched the rehearsal.

The models, who are from New Heart Network Agency in Prudential Kuching and a student from Brisbane, were excited to walk the runway wearing CARRO golf fashion.

Founder and CEO of STYLO Malaysia Fashion Week, Datuk Nancy Yeoh, was in attendance. She had travelled to Kuching to observe the local fashion scene.

Dr Chetan Sharma, an IT and cultural expert from Bangalore, India, was also in attendance. He was in Kuching for the 29th Celebration of the International Delphic Council, which was hosted by Kuching Delphians. Following the live broadcast in 94 countries, he decided to join the MKA 2023 as a judge for the talent, cultural, and evening gown segments.

Already amazed by the various cultural presentations from kids, he was impressed by the CARRO trendy golf wears showcased on the runway.

Our writer, who was also the show’s choreography, had the opportunity to interview Westwood as well.

Q: What was it like visiting Kuching for the first time?

A: It was amazing to be in Kuching for the first time! The city is beautiful and the people are warm and friendly. It’s a welcome change from the fast-paced life in KL.

What drew you to take part in the event?

CARRO’s presence in Kuching was a great opportunity. It was really exciting for us to be a part of a charity event to raise awareness of autism and to be a part of the Malaysian Kids Ambassador 2023.

What did you present?

We showcased some of our latest Golf Polo collection, titled “Away”, and the designs will be available this month.

With the exception of a 15-year-old Malaysian student from Brisbane, the models were all from a Life Insurance company. What was your experience with that?

It was perfect! CARRO is a brand that caters to people of all ages and sizes. The models from the New Heart Network Agency in Prudential Kuching and Sammi Ong, our Brisbane student, were a joy to work with. It was their first time modelling, and they had a great time. The cheers and response from the audience completed the entire experience of walking for CARRO as soon as they had our apparels on and walked down the runway. We believe that it will be something they will remember for a long time. They are our new CARRO brand fans for sure!

Do you have a distributor or clients in Kuching, given that CARRO is more well-known as a golf brand?

CARRO is making waves in the golf world. In Kuching, we have a lot of brand fans and clients. We are looking at collaborating with a local distributor in order to make CARRO more accessible to the lovely people of Kuching and the rest of East Malaysia.
