THE proposed cascading dam projects in the state will only proceed with majority support from local communities.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan emphasised that this is the stand of the state government.
“Regarding the cascading dam issue, Telang Usan assemblyman (Datuk Dennis Ngau) has provided a clear explanation.
“We know that the majority in the area have shown support for the (cascading dam) project in Sungai Tutoh, Baram, to be implemented.
“However, if the majority of the people oppose the project, then it will not proceed,” he said.
He said this while delivering his winding-up speech on the Natural Resources and Environment Bill 2024 during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting yesterday (Nov 12).
Awang Tengah reiterated that while there is significant enthusiasm for the project, it will not proceed without majority consensus from the community.
“Therefore, our stance is that if the community wants it, we will proceed with the work. Feasibility studies would also be conducted.
“But if the majority objects, then ‘sik bok’ (no need),” he said.
He further said that only with 100 per cent agreement from the community would the Sarawak government move forward with the project.
