SIBU: He was entrusted to handle cash deposits of a mosque here.

Apparently, however, he resorted to abusing the trust and stole a substantial amount of the mosque’s money over a period.

He may have thought he could get away with it, but the dishonesty of the suspect, a chief cashier of a bank here, was uncovered by the mosque’s treasurer.

Sibu deputy OCPD Supt Martin Koo said yesterday that on April 15 the mosque’s treasurer noticed some discrepancies in the account for transactions between 2017 and March 2019.

“The treasurer went through the 21 bank-in slips and discovered that there was a shortfall of RM70,467,” Martin said.

“Initial investigation by the bank revealed that the suspect had used the money for personal purposes,” said Martin, adding that police are investigating the case under Section 408 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust.
