KUCHING: A “Cashless Society and its Future” Programme will be held at the Youth and Sports Complex here this Friday (August 10\) from 3pm to 5pm.
The programme is co-organised by Sarawak United National Youths Organisation (SABERKAS) Pantai Damai and Kota Sentosa Branches with the purpose of educating and encouraging Sarawakians on the know-how and importance of cashless payment. Saberkas Pantai Damai Branch Chai rman and the Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity, Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, said the programme was in line with the Sarawak government’s vision to digitalise its state.
“Our Chief Minister has been embarking on digital economy since last year, and this is part of the programme to educate the people on cashless services,”
he told a press conference at the Pantai Damai Community Centre at Jalan Haji Taha here yesterday. Developed count r ies such as the United Kingdom, United States of America and China were already using cashless transactions, Rahman Junaidi added. “Saberkas supports the Chief Minister’s aim. Therefore, we want to encourage more members of the society to tap into cashless payment,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, the Organising Chairman of the event and Saberkas Kota Sentosa Branch Secretary, Eugene Yap, said the programme aimed to educate and encourage the society to use cashless payment applications (apps) such as Sarawak Pay, Boost Pay, and WeChat Pay. “We are targeting the general public, especially people from the business industry, to join the programme so that more can tap into this cashless payment,” he said.
Yap added that about 80 merchants had already registered to participate in the programme. “Cashless payment is so important today. 22 years ago, we have to book our flight tickets through travel agents but today, we can book them ourselves,” he said. Pointing out the importance of cashless payment, Yap said it was efficient, convenient and helped to speed up financial transactions.
“Cashless payment will also eliminate the fear of businesses receiving counterfeit money. The risks of people stealing cash are reduced as payments are made digitally,” he added. Talks on cashless services and payment will also be held during the programme. There will also be free registration for businesses which want to register with Boost Pay.
