KUCHING: Establishing a casino in Sarawak will help boost tourism in the state, said Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang.
Having raised similar ideas back in 2017, Gira said he is hopeful the state government will consider the matter.
“I totally agree with Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah,” he said, referring to the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts who had raised the possibility earlier.
“I mentioned the same idea on July 23, 2017. Hopefully, the state government will consider it seriously,” he said in a statement, Wednesday (March 22).
Abdul Karim had said that it was up to the state government whether to allow a casino to be built.
“It can be a good idea if regulated properly. Singapore can do it, I think, why not? As long as it does not lead to big social problems,” he said.
In 2017, Gira had proposed that a theme park and casino be set up in Tunoh, Kapit. Citing Singapore as an example, he said the island republic had attracted a lot of visitors with its casinos at Resort World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands, besides its Universal Studio theme park.
