KUCHING: Catholic Services Centre at The Catechumenate, Jalan Budaya here welcomes visitors especially from rural parishes who need a place to rest during the day.
Catholic Archbishop of Kuching, Archbishop Simon Peter Poh who conducted the blessing of the centre yesterday said that the centre was a one-stop centre for church welfare assistance and contacts.
“It will also operate as a food bank for the collection and distribution of food and other aid materials and also serves as a soup kitchen to provide meals for the urban poor.
“The public are also welcomed to donate sundry s or food to be prepared by the centre. Besides, those who need to rest for a day can come to the centre to take shower and have their meals, too,” he said.
Meanwhile, Archbishop Simon said that a charity run called ‘Catholic Services Charity Run 2017’ will be held at the St Joseph’s Cathedral ground on 9 September.
“The run is being organised by the Catholic Welfare Services Council Sarawak (CWS), a charitable arm of the Catholic Church to raise about RM2.5 million for Home of Peace, Catholic Services Centre, CWS Samaritans, Society of St Vincent De Paul, meals for Urban Poor through Society for Kuching Urban Poor (SKUP), Archbishop’s Disaster Relief Fund and rural parishes,” he pointed out.
A total of 13,000 sponsor cards and 3,000 student registration forms have been distributed since last May.
To take part in the run with sponsor cards, participants have to raise RM80 and above and donations above RM500 may request for tax-exempt receipts from CWS.
However, students are not allowed to go around to solicit for donations but they may take part by paying RM80.
