SIBU: People, especially the Chinese community in light of Chinese New Year, must not let their guard down as the Covid-19 threat is far from over.
The reminder came from Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing who said it was therefore important that everyone complies with existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
“Although the case count in Sarawak is relatively low, I urge everyone to take precautions and remain vigilant to curb the spread of the virus,” he said, pointing out that nationwide the number rose to 5,522 cases on Jan 28.
Under the circumstances Tiong advised the people to reduce the number of social visits to avoid more infections after the celebration.
Although the pandemic situation in Sarawak is still under control, the people should be aware that when SOPs are relaxed, there may be travellers and students returning home to the state from abroad, he said.
Tiong who is Bintulu MP however acknowledged that tradition called for a reunion of family members and other relatives to celebrate the occasion.
“But other unnecessary visits should be avoided,” he said, adding, “social gatherings can still be held when the country’s Covid-19 situation is more under control.”
“Let’s practice strong self -discipline this year and remember that the most valuable thing is life,” he said.
Tiong also reminded that clusters often arose during festive seasons when visits or pilgrimages are done without complying with SOPs.
“When the outbreak spreads through these activities, frontline personnel will face challenges in tracking close contacts.
“Therefore, we need to reduce social gathering because the freedom we have now is the result of the struggles and sacrifices made by the frontline workers,” said Tiong.
“Everyone must work together and be aware that gatherings should be avoided or done on a small scale, involving only immediate family members,” he added.
