VALENTINE’S Day is celebrated once a year, and couples mark the day uniquely. Some may have a longstanding tradition while some others may have a spontaneous method of showing affection.

The New Sarawak Tribune asked five couples how they celebrate the day of love.

This Valentine’s Day, my wife and I opted for a different approach. Rather than exchanging traditional gifts, we chose to lavish attention on our home instead. Together, we selected a cutting-edge robot vacuum cleaner and mop to help us with household chores. Since Valentine’s Day falls on Wednesday, we agreed to celebrate on the Sunday before. This accommodates my wife’s work commitments, while I simultaneously take care of our little one from the comfort of my home office.

Typically, there is no significant planning as we usually work during the day, but we try to find a fancier place to dine in and maybe watch a movie if there’s anything good; otherwise, we just have some drinks after dinner. However, we’re in a long-distance relationship this year. So, it will be very different and new for us. Perhaps this year, we will try to connect or eat something fancy over a video call. Even if it is after my husband’s work at 11pm.

Valentine’s Day is just like any other day, but for my husband and I, it is a reminder to my husband and me of our wedding anniversary. When we were still dating, I asked for roses for Valentine’s Day, but he refused to give them to me. His reason was ‘roses will eventually wither and die, but my love for you will never fade and die’. However, at the end of the day, going out for a romantic dinner is still the better option.

We have done so much together as a couple, and ideas would probably come randomly if we feel like doing something on Valentine’s Day. But, if I must say, I’d prefer going out for dinner or having an intimate time at home. It’s not significant for me and my partner. It sounds cliche, but every day is Valentine’s Day. But for some, it is an important day, and it’s okay.

Valentine’s Day serves as a reminder for couples to continue to uphold one another. Sometimes, we tend to be too occupied with work and our children. Valentine’s Day is a day for us to remind one another that we still care and love one another. One of the nicest things to do to celebrate each other is to go on dates and have dinner outside with my significant other.
