KUCHING: In celebration of World Rainforest Day, which falls on June 22, WWF-Malaysia is delighted to launch its latest publication, “Protecting People, Sustaining Nature – Finding the Balance for Kuba’an-Puak and the Maligan Highlands.”

This insightful 98-page book explores the delicate balance between conservation, indigenous well-being, and sustainable development in Sarawak.

“Made possible through funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the book takes readers on a journey into the last remnants of contiguous forests in the heart of Sarawak,” WWF-Malaysia said in a statement yesterday (June 21).

“These forests, rich with biodiversity and cultural diversity, serve as vital ecosystems for indigenous communities such as the Penan, Kelabit and Lun Bawang, contributing to the unique fabric of Sarawak’s hinterland,” it said.

“This book embodies our dedication and commitment to achieving a harmonious coexistence between nature and human development. It represents a beacon of hope for sustainable practices that benefit both indigenous communities and the environment,”said Cynthia Chin, head of the Sarawak Conservation Programme at WWF-Malaysia.

She added, “On World Rainforest Day, we are reminded of the crucial need to protect our rainforests.

“They are essential for preserving biodiversity and motivating action to ensure their safety. The book highlights WWF-Malaysia’s efforts in community-based conservation to safeguard these valuable ecosystems and support the livelihoods of indigenous communities.”

To celebrate this milestone, a limited number of complimentary copies of the book will be available from the end of June 2024 through a special giveaway on WWF-Malaysia’s social media platforms.
