Miri: The state government will leave the issue of bilateral relationships between Sarawak and the neighbouring countries to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that Sarawak is prepared to cement ties with neighbouring countries such as Brunei Darussalam, Singapore and Indonesia in all matters concerning both parties.
Referring to a recent official visit to Brunei Darussalam, Abang Johari said that Sarawak has special relationships with the country and several matters were brought by both Brunei and Malaysia, such as the aviation industry.
“We have three countries which have bilateral relations. One of them is Indonesia.
“During the Prime Minister’s visit to Jakarta, President Jokowi proposed a venture to build a hydro dam in West Kalimantan with SESCO. The Prime Minister has sought our input.
“Another neighbouring country is Singapore. We have several matters which need discussing between Malaysia and Singapore. Specifically in the carbon industry,” he said.
He said this when met by the reporters during a Chinese New Year visit yesterday to the residence of State Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, who is also Senadin assemblyman.
Abang Johari added that Sarawak’s involvement in bilateral ties depend on the decision of the Prime Minister because it involves Malaysia’s relationship with neighbouring countries.
Present at the visit were Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and State Secretary Datuk Seri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki and other dignitaries.
Later the Premier and his entourage proceeded to visit Shin Yang Shipping Corporation Bhd (Syscorp) chairman Tan Sri Ling Chiong Ho followed by Samling Group founder Tan Sri Yaw Teck Seng.
