KUCHING: The Centre of Technical Excellence (Centexs) Kuching will be upgraded into a digital academy starting next year.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the upgrading is in line with Sarawak’s agenda towards a digital economy.
“When it is recognised as an academy, the training certificates would be upgraded to graduate training that includes master degree which focuses on digital training,” he told reporters after launching the Centexs Technical, Digital and Heritage Integrated Complex in Santubong, yesterday.
Abang Johari also mentioned that there is a need to have 5G digital infrastructure.
“Here at Centexs, the facilities have been upgraded. It has many labs equipped with the latest technology to help train students,” he pointed out.
He mentioned that when everything is digitally-based within the next five to 10 years, there is a need to produce more highly- skilled people in the digital field, and that is through Centexs.
Speaking on the advancement of 5G technologies, Abang Johari said nowadays Western countries utilise 5G in aquaculture.
“They use 5G technology to breed salmon, so maybe we can use a similar technology to increase the population of ‘ikan terubuk’,” he said.
He stressed with 5G usages in aquaculture, data collected from the sensors at the farm will be transmitted directly to the experts, and from there they will advise on how to improve breeding techniques.
On a separate matter, Abang Johari was asked if the three other Centexs in Lundu, Betong and Dalat will be upgraded into an academy, in which he replied that they will remain as they are for now.
This means that those who want to further their training would have to enrol at Centexs in Kuching, he said.
