KUCHING: In celebration of the University Sarawak Malaysia (UNIMAS) 30th-anniversary celebration here yesterday, the Chancellery Square, one of UNIMAS’ most recognisable landmarks, has been renamed Chancellery Bucida Square.
The vice chancellor of UNIMAS Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said in his welcoming speech that the renaming of the square is fitting for one of UNIMAS’ most revered spots, cherished and enjoyed by its staff and students for many years now.
“Apart from the aesthetic appeal, the planting of trees is also part of the university’s effort to sustain biodiversity and balance carbon emissions,” he said.
Kadim added that the White Bucida or Terminalia Mantaly “Tricolor” was chosen as the planted tree, with its symmetrical tiered branches and layered crowns making it perfect for parks and street avenues.
“This all-around beauty, also known as the umbrella tree, is very popular with architects and interior landscapers for its attractive features which include a smooth bark covered with spots, streaks and blotches that lend it its pale-grey complexion.
“The leaves are small and greenish, with uneven crenate margins. Individually, the White Bucida has a formal neat appearance, but is especially majestic when planted in masses, thanks to its glossy leaves which stay full and clustered all year round,” he added.
He said the planting of the White Bucida around the square was one of the most attractive locations on campus while simultaneously providing shade for staff and students with its ornamental foliage and statuette canopies.
“All in all, a delightful keepsake of UNIMAS’ illustrious past 30 years and a perfect backdrop for a more glorious future,” he said.
Also present at the function was the UNIMAS’ chairman and board of directors Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie.
