KUCHING: Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah commended the Society for Cancer Advocacy and Awareness Kuching (SCAN) for its noble objectives and intentions.
“Even the word ‘cancer’ itself strikes fear in us, and if we see a doctor and are diagnosed with cancer, that itself is like a death sentence,” Fatimah said when receiving a courtesy call by SCAN led by its advisor Datin Dayang Mariani Abang Zain and president Sew Boon Lui.
The visitors had come to inform Fatimah of their second anniversary fundraising dinner and book launch on July 24.
Fatimah said the reason cancer patients would delay treatment is because they do not want to hear the truth or are ashamed of their medical condition.
She said because of shame many would opt for alternative treatments.
“It is very sad to see cases whereby they have delayed treatment and tried many types of alternative therapies and supplements believing that these could cure cancer.
“Unfortunately, that is not the case and by then the cancer has developed to an advanced stage,” she said.
She called on SCAN to help change this scenario, saying many lives can be saved if sufferers are well-informed.
The dinner event will be held at Sarawak Club at 7.30pm and tickets are priced at RM150 per person.
