KUCHING: The Malaysian Consumer Action Council’s (MTPN) Chinese New Year culture dinner and charity programme here has become a platform for community engagement and charity work.

In stating this, MTPN Sarawak branch president Wynson Ong Teck Ping emphasised the significance of charity work in raising awareness about societal challenges and fostering empathy, adding that charity initiatives also contribute to better interethnic relationships, community spirit, and unity, transcending ethnic, religious, and social boundaries.

“I believe there are many more benefits to be gained by actively participating in or organising charity work to help those in need.

“In conclusion, charity work can help create a compassionate society, foster unity among communities, and contribute to the formation of the desired civil society,” he said.

He expressed his aspiration, stating that as a representative of MTPN Sarawak, he hopes to coordinate comparable events during Hari Raya, Hari Gawai, and other festive seasons.

He said the aim is to showcase the diverse cultural heritage of different communities, seeking increased acknowledgment and respect from the multicultural society at large.

“In doing so, we can enhance national unity among each other. This culture must be passed down to the next generation,” he concluded.

Meanwhile Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng pointed out during his speech that in Sarawak, we are able to celebrate with each other openly, without issue.

“But, our unity goes beyond this. We are indeed a diverse tapestry of cultures that coexist on a basis of mutual respect. But we also enjoy a common thread of shared values.

“We have a shared commitment to fostering unity, based on an appreciation of community and of how we must live together, supporting the less fortunate and celebrating the successful among us.

“It is fitting, therefore, that tonight we can use our unique cultural practices to support our foundational values. Tonight, we can raise funds for those in need through this evening of fellowship. Events like this underscore the strength that lies in our diversity,” he said.

The dinner, he said, serves as a celebration of cultures that defines Malaysians and Sarawakians. It is a testament to the ability to embrace differences, learn from one another, and stand united despite the diversity that enriches our lives.

“The funds raised tonight will contribute to initiatives that address pressing issues in our community – be it education, healthcare, or support for those facing economic hardships.

“I am proud of the countless individuals, businesses, and organisations that have rallied behind this cause, demonstrating the true essence of community. Together, we have the ability to shape a brighter future and leave a legacy of compassion for generations to come,” he concluded.

During the event, cash assistance of RM3,000 was presented to the Sarawak Society for The Deaf, Sarawak Deaf Sports Association, Sarawak Deaf Art and Culture Association, Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society, Wisheshland International, Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), Kuching Autism Association, The Salvation Army, House of Joy (Persatuan OKU Kuching) and Kuching Life Care Society.
