KUCHING: 210 cyclists including 20 from Brunei will be participating in Mukah Jamboree Funride 2018 – Charity Ride for Adik Fifi to be held in Mukah and Dalat on 22 April, said a press statement yesterday.
Organised by Mukah Bicycle Club and also supported by Ministry of Youth and Sports as well as Malaysian Youth Parliament (Parliamen Belia Malaysia), the route for the ride is from Mukah to Dalat and back covering a total distance of 90 kilometres.
The cyclists will be flagged off at 6.30am in Mukah and when they reach Dalat they will be received by Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato’ Sri Hajah Fatimah Abdullah at 8:30am or latest by 9am.
“So far, have received participation totalling 210 persons from throughout Sarawak including 20 participants from Brunei,” MBC president Haji Jamil Bin Haji Othman disclosed during the presentation of sponsorship for the event from Lea Sports Centre at Fatimah’s office at Masja, Petra Jaya in Kuching yesterday.
“This is not a competition but just a charity funride to raise fund to support Adik Fifi,” he said, adding that there will be a stop at every 10 kilometres. On the way back to Mukah they will be given lunch provided by the organiser and the participants will also be given finishing medals. There will also be lucky draws for the participants too.
He said the participation fee for the ride is only RM60 and participants will be given T-shirt sponsored by Lea Sports Centre. The participants will also be given goodies. Fatimah said Adik Fifi, or Fifi Nurlyana Syafina Mohamad Adika, is an eight-year-old girl who lost both her parents and a brother in a road accident on 10 June 2016.
“In the accident, both her parents and her brother died. She was the only one who survived the accident but paralysed from her waist down, and is now using special wheelchair,” she said.
“Now she is eight years old and studying in SK kampung Seberang Mukah and she is now being looked after by her aged grand mother,” she said.
Fatimah who witnessed the handing over of the sponsorship from Lea Sports Centre to the organisers at her office yesterday lauded them for taking the initiative in organising the event.
“This time in terms of participation, there are more and also in terms of the route it is also far. From Mukah to Dalat, it is quite a distance actually. In my own constituency if from Oya to Dalat it is about 22 kilometres. But this is from Mukah to Dalat and is quite a distance and the road is not like in Kuching. It will be a challenge,” she said.
“It is an activity that we encourage because it gathers people who share the same love or passion for cycling together and at the same time it keeps them fit. It is also meant to collect fund for Adik Fifi,” she said.
“She is now eight years old and in her life later on she will need some kind of assistance. Whatever fund should be channelled for her welfare and education in future,” she said pointed out.
Fatimah suggested that whatever contribution or collection from the public should be for the education of Adik Fifi.
“Adik Fifi is a smart girl. It is good for us to give support to her because at that tender age she lost her parents and her brother and now she is staying with her grandmother,” she said.
Those who wish to contribute towards for the fund for Adik Fifi can channel their donation to Maybank Mukah account 161109480758 in the name of her grandmother Mariah Bt Kaderi.
According to Jamil, a portion of entrance fee will be contributed to Adik Fifi. There are some groups who are already doing collection for her and there some who are paying RM100 for the participating free and the balance will be given to Adik Fifi.
“It depends on how much people contribute. But from the RM60 entry fee, half will be given to Lea Centre for the T-shirt and RM20 will be given to Adik Fifi. But some will contribute (directly to her) themselves.
Those from Brunei are also doing collection. We hope to collect at least RM5,000 and we hope for the best,”Jamil said.
According to him, Adik Fifi had been given three wheelchairs, namely one from the Buddhist Association, one from Mukah Hospital Visitors Board and recently from PBB Mukah.
According to Poh Siok Hoon, Senior Operation Manager of Lea Sports Centre, this is the third time Lea Centre Sports Centre had been involved in sponsoring this Mukah Jamboree Funride event together with Mukah Bicycle Club.
“ This year, we are doing the charity ride exclusively for Adik Fifi. We are proud to see that there are 210 participants. The first time when we had this ride, there was only 80 participants, and last year we were able to hit 130 and this year there are 210 participants.
“We hope we can collect as much fund as possible to help Adik Fifi, and we are proud to be part of this cause,” Poh said.
