MIRI: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Piasau branch secretary, Councillor Karambir Singh, said a collective request from five SUPP Sibu branches for someone from the party to be chairman of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) was reasonable and logical.
He said a prominent SUPP leader has traditionally been a chairman of SMC.
“SUPP is well-established in Sibu going back 60 years. It has deep roots and good network linking all the communities in the town,” he said.
Since the five branches have unanimously endorsed Datuk Chieng Buong Toon for the post, it would be good if due consideration is given to the request, he said.
However, SUPP secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting refused to comment on the matter.
On Tuesday, the said branches — Dusong, Bukit Assek, Pelawan, Nangka and Bawang Assan — strongly suggested that Chieng be appointed to the post.
