SIBU: The celebratory theme for this year’s World Red Cross (WRC) and Red Crescent (RC) Day resonates deeply with the situation today.
In stating this Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said the theme of ‘Keeping Humanity Alive’ is of particular significance in these times of unprecedented crises and loss.
“It is a call to recognise and celebrate those who selflessly dedicate their time, and sometimes their lives, to ease the suffering of others and uphold human dignity.
“These humanitarian workers, our everyday heroes, face immense challenges and dangers as they work tirelessly to protect and saves lives, ” he said at the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu branch’s celebration of WRC and RC Day on Sunday (May 26).
Chieng said according to International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) website, since September last year, 28 courageous Red Cross and Red Crescent staff members and volunteers had lost their lives.
These brave souls, he pointed out, perished while peforming rescue operations during floods, natural disasters, and armed conflicts.
He said their ultimate sacrifice reminds of the perilous nature of their mission and collective duty to ensure that their life-saving work is fully respected and protected.
As for the Sibu branch, Chieng saluted them for their relentless efforts and dedication to their work which embodies the spirit of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, adding that their impact on the community is immeasurable.
Also present were Lanang MP Alice Lau, Sibu MP Oscar Ling , Sibu Chinese paramount community leader Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau and MRCS Sibu Branch chairman Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee.
