KUCHING: The children of a couple who passed away due to an accident have received their parents’ Social Security Organisation (Socso) benefits.
Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman visited the children of the late Abdul Wahap Yusup, 52, and Sulyani Gimo, 54, today.
Both children — Mohammad Riduan Abdul Wahap, 16, and 12-year-old Mohammad Rizman Abdul Wahap — would receive RM1,317 every month until they reach the age of 21. They also received one-off funeral management assistance amounting to RM4,000.
“We hope that the monthly payments could help to ease the children’s burden as they pursue their education. I would also like to thank Socso for their assistance,” said Fazzrudin.
He urged the self-employed to become a Socso contributor as there are a lot of benefits to be gained.
On another note, Sarawak Socso director Phillip Sangkan said if the children did well in their studies, they could apply for Socso assistance (scholarship) on condition that applications to other organisations had been rejected.
“Then, they can come to us to get the scholarship and we’ll see what’s the next step for them. And they will continue to receive the pension before they finish their studies.”
Meanwhile, their uncle Safari Yusup, who is now their guardian, expressed his thanks to Socso and Fazzrudin.
Mohammad Riduan also vowed to excel in his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), which he will be sitting for next year, in memory of his parents.
Abdul Wahap and Sulyani passed away in May in an accident that happened at the Matang FAC road. Their car was hit from behind by another car. They passed away at the scene due to internal injuries.
