SIBU: The growing population and expansion of housing estates here have led to a pressing need for more leaders within the Chinese community and villages.
Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders (SDCCL) president Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming said there is a shortage of Chinese community leaders and village chiefs (KMKK) in town and Kanowit, with many positions remain unfilled.
“Despite submitting appeals for the reappointment of several Chinese KMKK whose terms ended last year or even earlier, we have yet to receive any responses,” Lau said at the Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders (SDCCL) Lunar New Year celebration dinner held at a prominent hotel here on Monday.
He added that a few reappointed KMKKs are still waiting for their official appointment letters.
Lau praised the expired-term KMKKs for their years of dedicated service and significant achievements recognised by local residents. He advocated for their reappointment, urging the Sarawak government to expedite the process for the benefit of the community.
Furthermore, Lau congratulated the newly appointed and reappointed Chinese community leaders, emphasising the demanding nature of their roles.
“As community leaders, our main role is to serve as a bridge between the people and the government. It’s crucial to understand our responsibilities and strive for continuous self-improvement,” he said.
Reflecting on the New Year, Lau hoped for community leaders to build on past momentum to make a positive impact on the community.
“With the strong foundation laid by our predecessors, I am confident in our association’s continued dedication to enhancing the influence and unity of Chinese community leaders across all sectors for positive growth,” Lau added.
Also present were Sibu Division Resident Datu Wong Hee Sieng, Kanowit District Officer Jackline August, Selangau District Officer Inting Nyami, Sibu Iban Community paramount chief Temenggong Stanley Geramong, and Pemanca Datuk Jason Tai Hee.
