SERIAN: Chinese education is for all races, said Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Noting that the Sarawak government has long recognised the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), he remarked that more funds have been committed to assist Chinese-type schools.
“This is because it (Chinese-type schools) is not only for Sarawakians who are Chinese.
“Before this, the school board is responsible for the construction of school buildings and so on.
“But the state government has realised that and started to save, so every year we increase funding with the priority of going for the building of schools and new buildings so that the school will not collapse because it is so dilapidated,” he said.
He told reporters this after presenting a cheque worth total of RM518,232 as assistance to Serian Public Secondary School yesterday.
The assistance was from the Sarawak government, meant to help the public school run its operations since it had no funding from the federal government.
Asked about his view of the newly launched Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) manifesto, Dr Sim said it is something that they (the GPS) took seriously.
“We pledged, we took it seriously and will fulfil. In that manifesto, we can see the same principle of inclusivity.
“We want Sarawak to be the most prosperous and strongest in terms of economics, and we (will) fight for Sarawak’s rights.
“In West Malaysia, they have cancer hospital, better school and so on for how long already?
“We have to be minimum equal, if not, better,” he stressed.
Also present were Serian incumbent Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem, Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus and Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions president Datuk Richard Wee.
