KOTA SAMARAHAN: The construction of the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Kai Nang here is the state government’s effort to improve the Chinese education system and its availability for all races in Sarawak.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Hui Kian pointed out that the effort was in line with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari and his predecessor, the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem’s aspiration of putting emphasis on Chinese education to pave the way for Sarawakians to be globally competitive.
“This is part of Sarawak’s Chinese education. We do this because the Chinese education in Sarawak is for all races.
“Under the chief minister and his predecessor, they have always emphasised that learning the language will help us to be competitive internationally.
“And we need to do that so that by 2030, the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy can be attained, and Chinese education will help us to achieve that,” he said.
He said this when speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of SJKC Kai Nang at Jalan Midway, here on Thursday (Jan 20).
Association of the Boards of Management of Aided Chinese Primary Schools Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions chairman Datuk Jonathan Chai Voon Tok, when met on the sidelines, said the school is projected for completion by the end of 2023.
He said the overall cost of the construction of the school is set at RM9 million.
“The total cost is RM9 million, but we are currently short of RM5 million and the federal government has contributed RM2 million so far.
“We hope that through the assistance from Dr Sim, we will be able to get more funding from the Special Unit for Aided Chinese Primary Schools under his care,” he added.
Chai said the association was also looking to organise fundraisers at a suitable time once the COVID-19 pandemic situation has subsided.
