Chinese universities want to collaborate with Curtin Malaysia Miri campus

KUCHING: Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) campus in Miri, Sarawak recently welcomed a delegation from Chinese universities on March 21.

According to a statement by Curtin Malaysia, there were over 70 representatives from 38 universities across China that are keen to explore opportunities for collaboration in education with Curtin Malaysia.

For the record, Curtin Malaysia in Miri is the university’s largest campus outside of Australia.

On hand to welcome the visitors were Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Vincent Lee, the dean of the Faculty of Business Prof. Pauline Ho, director of School of Pre-University and Continuing Education (SPACE) Assoc. Prof. Fidella Tiew, and director of future students and external engagement Debora Caroline.

Prof Lee, in welcoming the visitors at a briefing session in the campus’s auditorium, stated that Curtin Malaysia is always open to collaborations with universities in other countries, including China.

“We view this visit as a significant step towards exploring potential academic collaboration between Curtin Malaysia and your respective universities in China,” he said.

Prof Lee said that Curtin Malaysia stands proud as the earliest and largest global campus of Curtin University, a global university ranked among the top 200 in the world in the 2024 QS rankings, and in the top one per cent in the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). 

He added that Curtin Malaysia was also proud to be the highest-ranked university in Borneo, adding significance to it being among five institutions of higher learning, including two foreign branch campuses, owned by the Sarawak government. 

“Our commitment to relevance both within and outside Sarawak is evident in the diverse programmes we offer, carefully crafted to meet the evolving needs of a global dynamic landscape,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prof Ho later briefed the visitors on the university’s background, facilities, academic programmes and institutional achievements.

She also outlined how students from China can enroll in various programmes at Curtin Malaysia.

This was followed by a testimony from a PhD student Ruoyu Wang from China, who shared his university journey at Curtin Malaysia and how Curtin offers boundless opportunities for Chinese students to pursue programmes of their choice.

To cap off the visit, the delegates were taken on a tour of the campus, with a total area of 1,200 hectares is one of the world’s largest foreign branch campus in Malaysia.
