KUCHING: A disappointed Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen is hoping his party colleague, Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei, will reconsider his decision to quit the party.
Reacting to Wong’s quit decision published in the media today (July 27), Chong said he was shocked and disappointed with former’s action.
He said political parties had their ups and downs and difference of opinion, stressing that a “true party member” would stick with the party through thick and thin.
“Whatever misunderstanding and disagreement among members, it is surely not a valid reason for quitting the party as the political struggle of DAP remains unwavering and unchanged at all times, which is to fight corruption and to restore a clean and fair system of administration in Malaysia for the betterment of the people,” he said.
Nevertheless, he said the party would continue to speak the truth, without fear or favour.
“It is sad to see a leader turning against the party which he has represented all these years.
“More so, King Wei has been my special assistant for many years until he was first elected as the Adun for Padungan in 2011 under the DAP ticket.”
Chong went on to say that like all his other special assistants, Wong had a free hand in his political work.
“For a decision of such gravity, I would have thought that he would first communicate his wish to me and discuss beforehand. But regrettably, that was not the case.
“Therefore, I hope he will reconsider his decision and not disappoint the voters who voted for him in Padungan,” he said.
Wong’s decision is seen as a “big blow” to the state DAP as he was also its vice chairman.
Wong said he was relinquishing all party posts and resigning as a member with immediate effect.
He also said he would not seek re-election in the coming state election.
