KUCHING: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen has has urged the Sarawak Furniture Industry Association to conduct a thorough study of policies affecting the industry and explore viable improvements to boost its growth.
He said this is crucial for the government to provide support beyond financial means, but also through appropriate regulations and incentives to drive the furniture industry forward.
“In other words, it is more effective for the government to address these issues through policy,” he said following a dialogue with the association yesterday (Sept 4).
Chong also raised concerns that the government and related departments often focus on feedback from large conglomerates and leaving small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) overlooked.
“Many SMEs struggle due to a lack of government resources, as their concerns rarely reach decision-makers.”
Chong also highlighted that although Sarawak’s timber export volume is twice that of West Malaysia, the latter’s production value is four times higher.
He urged the state government to address the issue of timber resources being exported abroad as neighbouring countries like Indonesia have halted timber exports.
“Sarawak must ensure that local timber is available for our furniture manufacturers to promote the sustainable growth of the industry.”
He also pointed out the low wages in Sarawak’s manufacturing sector, which currently account for only 16 per cent of the state’s GDP.
“In West Malaysia and other developed countries, manufacturing contributes 50 to 60 per cent of their GDP,” he said, adding that Sarawak must improve its strategic planning to enhance the contribution of local industries.
He also vowed to assist the association in voicing their concerns through various channels, including the State Assembly and Parliament, to ensure their issues are effectively addressed.
During the session, Chong also handed over grants to the association for educational purposes to benefit the children of its members.
